SHORT ESSAYS OF DECAY
photographer: Jan Smith
The curator:Heidi Erdmann
Smith is a Mexican-born photographer who lives in Mexico City and Sã o Paulo (Brazil). His photography explores the realm of
destruction and decay and focuses on the effects of human error in technology and a lack of corporate conscience.
Evocatively photographed, his carefully composed and crafted images of abandoned and forgotten places and man-made
desolation invites the viewer to question the concept of progress.
Short Essays of Decay features several photographic series set in the abandoned village of Kolmanskop (Namibia) and the
island of Gunkanjima (Japan), the ship cemetery of Nouadhibou (Mauritania) and the nuclear wastelands surrounding the
Chernobyl plant (Ukraine).
